What Is A "Third-Party" Ad Server?

When you sign in to YPN, the current poll asks -
"If you are using a 3rd party ad server, who are you using?"
The choices are DoubleClick, FastClick and Inceptor.

So, what exactly is a "third-party ad server"?
First party is publisher, second party is advertiser, so third party must be the ad server, right? If this is true, where is Google, as a choice? I don't get it. Would someone please straighten me out?

What about AdBrite, Azoogle, Clicksor and the others. Are they "third-party ad servers", as well? I've never even heard of Inceptor (recently purchased by Superpages).

So, you are saying the third parties are anyone other than the publisher and Yahoo?

If so, then their choices aren't that great. For instance, there is much more popularity of AdBrite, Azoogle, Clicksor, than there is with "Inceptor". That makes me wonder about their choices. The validity of polls is determined in large measure by the choices that you are given. If some VERY likely choices are absent, the results of the poll are pretty worthless.

For example, "What time do you eat dinner?"
    9AM
    Noon, or
    3PM

Without the 6PM choice, you are going to get poor results.
(This would be similar to the "3rd party" poll, IMHO.)

"If you are using a 3rd party ad server, who are you using?"

    It does not define "third-party".
It does not say ANYTHING about ON THE SAME PAGE.
It does not say ANYTHING about CPC, CPA, CPM, contextual or anything else.
Therefore, I interpret this as ANY THIRD-PARTY ADS.

That's why I find this to be a very confusing question (poll).

3rd party Ad server means the server you use (if any) to manage the delivery of your creatives (could be Yahoo Publisher, banners, and so forth) and if you guys noticed they clearly gave you examples... I wish you had at least tried to 'Google' the three examples they gave... Anyway there is a free one available and it's called "PHP Ads New"...
