What is a reasonable expectation of converted visitors to sales?

I am trying to determine what is a reasonable number of converted sales i should be receiving from my visitors. Reviewing for 2006, i have been converting only 1.5% of my unique visitors. Id imagine that this is large in part to the fact that my site is insanely confusing.

What conversion ratio are other people reaching? what is a reasonable expectation, and is there any way to measure the conversion ratio of my competitors?

3-4% is a good number. 1.5% is typical of a traditional direct mail campaign conversion.

In my experience, it's completely different for different markets, products and sites... Some lead sites are upwards of 15% to 20% conversion, some are in your range. Anything with phones is crazy competitive and customers have a high threshold for change.

I'd first start with your admitted "insanely confusing" site... ya might wanna fix that if you want to get better conversion.

hahaha we are working on it. its involves tons of back-end programing and will take a while. i was just looking for a number to know whats reasonable. I think 1.5% was actually high estimate and its more like 1%. Either way with site redesign i am confident we can up that number.

anyone else care to share your conversion rates?

id be interested just to get an idea of what people are getting.

i do recognize that i am in a highly competitive market, but we have been around since the beginning and are pretty well known within our niche target market.
