I have never really touched on the subject guys but why are proxy sites really popular?

    What are the key benefits?

The best answer will get rep :)

It allows you to surf the internet under an assumed IP address, so it makes it harder to trace who you really are. The benefits? If you're commiting online fraud it's harder to find you!

They're also useful for getting around school filters.

Yeah, a lot of kids use them to access Myspace at school, where the school's filter has disabled access to Myspace. There's actually several types of proxies though, there's webbased proxies like www.unblockster.com and then there's transparent and anonymous, that work by changing your browsers proxy settings. These work without bombarding you with a ton of ads and with high compatibility with sites, but are generally slower.
