Branching off from Naples thread. He had a funny picture that people are using. How does a perm redirect work in this case ? What is it exactly?
I have not read the thread you are referencing so am not sure how to comment. There are two type redirects, a temporary 302 redirect or a permanent 301 redirect. Often redirects come into play when you move a web. As an example, I did a site for a church that folded due to financial mis-management. The domain name was associated with the church and continuing the use of that domain might result in financial liabilities. The minister wished to keep the site. We purchased a new domain name, moved the site to a new server under new domain name, and put in a permanent redirect on the old server. Anyone who typed in old URL was automatically redirected to new site. By doing the redirect the search engines were able to find the new site and avoid indexing the new site from scratch.
