What is a lot of traffic?

I keep reading that to make any money from Adsnese you need to generate a lot of traffic to your website. Now I suspect that this is going to be a "How long is a piece of string?" type of question, but how much traffic is a lot of traffic?

depends on how much you want to earn ;)
You want to make 50$ / day? get 10000 visitors/day who may give you a 2% CTR on your site ie 200 clicks and lets presume you get 25cents /click you can make 50$/day.
Want to earn more? Get more traffic simple :p

100,000 uniques daily is a lot of traffic, to me.

For Adsense, I'd say 1,000 is a good bit.

Depends on your own calculations and the traffic you get.

Well i would say the more the better .. depends on what CTR you are managing . If the desirable amount of clicks are coming with 1k then its fine else you need more .

Are you talking 10 K uniques or impressions?

I get 15 - 20 K impressions and only make $15 - $20/day. I run an online forum and people don't seem to like clicking on ads much :( I have not made 1 cent from targeted affiliate promotion either.

How can one increase that CTR (avg < 0.5%) when you have frequent users who become "blind" to the ads?

Use alternate colors to change the look of the links and break that ad blindness. Might help a bit... example of a link using 3 colors at random :

    google_color_link = ["0000CC","800000","005500"];

Forums are known for not generating a lot of revenue, a normal site with that many impressions should make a fair bit more than a forum

Blend the design almost entirely with the forum.

Actually it is blended exactly like the ads in this forum, so maybe the opposite would work better?

As you say, this is an open ended question with a lot of variables. However, I suspect if a site manages to get 10,000 uniques a day, then most people will be extremely happy.

A lot is twice what you have now.

My sites collectively get around 3000 unique ips per day. That to me is decent. A year ago that would have been considered a lot. Two years ago that would have been considered not particularly good.

I agree completely, a lot is all relative. It is depends on what you do with that traffic and how you compute your CTR relative to different statistics.

A site that generates about 3,000 uniques per day can get about 50,000 impressions. However, someone with a site where people do not move around as much, with the same impressions (like 10,000 uniques and 50,000 impressions) can easily have a higher CTR and therefore a higher revenue. The more people that come to a site the more likely it is that ads will be clicked (in my opinion). So while impressions are nice and everything, the number of visitors is what drives revenue (from a traffic sense) in my opinion.

So when you ask for a lot of traffic, I think that it is important to focus on unique visitors and not ad impressions. So to finally answer your question about what is a lot of traffic (i.e. visitors) I have to agree with KalvinB, it is always just more than you have ;).

10K uniques a day is a good, solid number for a traditional website or a blog. Basically this is how I gauge my sites: they are doing fantastic earnings when I have to move them to dedicated servers.

Also the CTR is pretty important, like earlier said getting 10-15k impression and earns only 15-20$ is no more good getting this much traffic, seems to be very poor CTR, people struggles to get more traffic and luckily you got well enough traffic, should concentrate on layout to place the ad unit in the proper place, visit other successful forums and look closely how they implemented the ad units to get more CTR.. I am only getting 700-800 unique visitors a day to my sites and gets around 25%-30% CTR, that makes me to earn around $50/day...

Wow... netjobs, you have a very high CTR. actually, it really depends on what you want. But, for me, high traffic = high earning.

Not good enough if you are in the wrong niche. I have a site with 1.2k unique daily but earning is less than 10US$ each day.
