What is a good pet to have?

    Hi,

I am thinking of moving to live on my own and I would like to get a pet to keep me company. I will not be around much during the day so I guess the pet will have to be low maintenance.

    Any suggestions.

Maybe an indoor/outdoor cat. When you're gone, they can go out and hunt for themselves, and they usually don't need a lot of attention.

Our cats usually spend sometime inside relaxing/cuddling/eating and a lot of time outside on their own - so not much work for us.

They hunt so they can feed themselves, you can let them outside without a leash/fence, they exercise themselves...

That's a good idea too and I really like cats. They are also very independent I think.

I didn't know cats can be classified as indoor and outdoor types. Is this trait peculiar to certain breeds.

Cats! They help you relax just by stroking them.

Not really, some people keep their cats inside all the time, some keep them outside all the time. We let our cats inside or outside whenever they want. If they want in or out they'll just sit by the door until someone opens it for them.

Just make sure that when you first get a cat (or move) that you keep the cat inside for a bit, so they understand that place as their home. Then when you let them out, they'll know where to come back to.

Definetly go with fish. They are all around great pets, I have 3 tanks and about 80 fish in total.

Cats are nice. I am not a fan of smaller mindless animals.

I also love fish. They are amazing and very relaxing to watch. They don't give you cuddles though.

The good thing about fish, I think, is that they are low maintenance. You can't take a sick fish to a vet, can you?

Nope most fish problems are handled right at home, and much more cheaply than cat or dog problems ;)

If you do get into fish I reccommend www.aquariacentral.com absolutely amazing fish froum community, over 1,000,000 posts. And if you post a question it is usually answered within minutes.

I really like dogs, especially hunting and guard ones, but since I will be moving to an apartment it won't be practical. Also I think pet dogs are far too needy for me.

There are no good pets, fish are low-maintenance but boring, most other animals are more exciting but too hard to clean up after, they also smell. I am not an animal fan.
