I am trying to figure out something because I am creating a new blog. But I am not sure what niche/category my blog should be. What is popular and something people like? Also since I am new, what are some good points and guidelines for a beginner at blogging, thanks.
Something that you know a lot about and can remain enthusiastic about. There'll be plenty of people who share the same interests as you.
CountryBoy's advice is the best you will get. You need to leverage your knowledge and be an happy blogger to draw traffic. Write about what you know and what you like.
Well what are the key factors in choosing a good niche. Perhaps: -Interest -Keyword popularity -Knowledge on the subject And what else? What are those requirements for having a good popular blog. Any help appreciated deeply! Also, how long (in hours) do you think it takes to create a successful blog. I mean since it has to be updated daily, perhaps 1-2 hours a day?

Well I know I am good at certain things. I wanted to create a blog on marketing,seo,or web developing but thought that, it would be appointed too a smaller majority of people, and that most people already have marketing blogs. Another idea I had was how about a blog on movies and music, or movies and food. I saw the top 10 google keyword competitors are not that tough to outrank in the keyword "movie blog" and "movie and music blog" . But a quick look on overture shows that niche may not get as much traffic as "news blog". But news blog is very hard to outscore for an amateur. Thanks.
Before this blog, I had a couple that I started with nothing else in mind but readers and money....They were crap, and unsuccessful. When I started my current blog, it was out of the blue on night, (about a month and a half ago), just to document and publish something about what I was interested in, and I didn't care if anybody read it, it was what I like and I could write for days about it. People are reading, and participating by sending me content.(that is what I wanted) Yesterday was a good stats day, 575...not big numbers, yet, but the point is, I am writing from the heart, and I am enjoying it. I can fore see some good numbers, because I never run out of subject matter, I have tons of experiences to relay, and I never think it's good enough (there is still so much to do) Blog like that, and you will be successful. Don't put the cart before the horse. If you blog based on popular subject matter, you will end up rehashing content from all over the internet because you will have to look for posts material. That will do you no good in terms of traffic, and your blog will serve no purpose except for a place to "Plop" some adsense down. JMO
nice. if you're not passionate about it you won't stay motivated when you aren't making any money or having success. that happened to me when I tried blogging about a topic that I hated but was known to make a lot of money. Obviously, I quit that blog cause I hated it.
If you are refering to me, my blog is about night life, and music, particularly house, techno, trance, around the world, with nightclub updates, tour and event schedules, DJ's, and news articles about clubbing and Night Life Entertainment. It's what I love and I grew up on the front lines of the beginning of House and Techno in Detroit, so I have TONS of experience. It's something that I enjoy, and I actually look forward to writing about it, and sharing with readers that we all are the same when it comes to the party!
That is key: Only write on subjects that you are familiar with and can contribute to. Otherwise, no one will bother reading it.
To be VERY successful (i.e., making more than $2-3K/month, or about 1,000,000 visitors per month), you need to spend far more than 1-2 hours per day. I've never met anyone who started from nothing and got anywhere with less. There's people like John Chow who have done it on 1-2 hours, but they already had/have established businesses or sites from which to draw visitors.
True, but I already think 1-2 hours is a load of time. With school and everything in accordance, more than that may be cutting into other things. I have seen most blogs and they have about 5-8 new blog posts everyday, and 1-2 hours should cover that. But thanks for all your help. I am still trying to decide what is a good topic to write on, and I have come onto a slight conclusion.
Couldn’t agree more, if you intend to make money from your blog or site, then you have to treat it like a business or a job and devote as much time, resources and effort as you can. Its not about making tens of posts each day, instead you have to concentrate on making good quality posts which takes time. Ratman2050 like others have said, write about some thing you are not only interested in, but have a good deal of information on. If you can’t, then you will end up writing mediocre content or copying stuff from other blogs, which frankly wouldn’t last long!
It took over 4 years and over 6 hours daily for 3 of my most successful sites to grow to the point that I don't have to babysit them anymore. But yes write about what you like the most, if you don't you will lose interest very, very fast. Also don't start something you know deep inside you will not finish, don't lie to yourself, being honest to yourself is the best way to find out what you truly want to write about.
5-8 posts per day, in 1-2 hours? Not possible, at least, not possible while maintaining a level of quality that will bring in readers. I can research and post a short post (e.g. like what I do at Neatorama.com) in about 30 minutes. A single "good" post that draws visitors takes 1-8 hours.
Hi Ratman, Almost any niche could be a good niche. A couple of the quickest ways to check out popularity of a niche is to do some search engine searches, (and / or keyword research using a keyword tool) and see how many results there are. Check out some of the search results to see if they are along the lines your looking for. Also, I use eBay and Amazon to find niches as well. They spend a lot of money on research for their categories. Browsing through the categories and seeing how many items are in certain ones gives you a good idea of popularity. Also it can give you ideas to dig down further into a niche market. Just dont go so deep that it becomes a micro niche! From there again you can do some keyword research. All that being said, you should do something you know about and like first. Your going to be putting a lot of time into it in the beginning and if it's something you have no interest in or worse... no knowledge of.. it's going to make it a miserable experience. My friend and I have agreed to create a blog. My friend is a very good writer, and has won awards for it in the past. He does not know anything about marketing, programming, seo, developing or any of that jazz, but he wants to help write blog posts. And from his work, I am sure he can do it. These are some categories we thought up of: -Personal Life (Something we both can talk about.) -Technology (Not really an expert, but can point out the latest technology.) -Marketing and SEO (Something I have passion for and experience with it for months.) -Movies and Music (Something mainly I do a lot with friends.) -Health (My friend's father is a scientist, and my friend has done many medical related science projects in his life. He likes studying cancer, leukemia, and other fatal diseases.) -News (Something my friend is excellent as reporting, as he wants to be a journalist, and is take a journalism class at school.) -Gaming (We both are very good gamers, and have knowledge on the subject, as we have played with pro gamers from around the world and know the inside stuff. Don't question our gaming skills ) -Sports (My friend is a sports fanatic, me I am far from it. I like sports, but he is into it, he knows the plays, he gets front row tickets to the NBA games, and knows what team is going to win the playoffs and why!) -Miscellaneous (I guess this includes random stuff. Everybody is good at being random. ) So what do you think of those categories? I am open for suggestions and constructive criticism.
