I'm thinking of hiring a Top Search Engine Consultation that asking for a fee of $95 per hours with a min of 5 hours. Some say that's cheap compare to $5000 for other company are asking for.

Any suggustion on this or input??

Run away from anyone that guarantees rankings.

No, I don't guarantee, but I have several top-ranked sites. Once you build a nice portfolio you can start getting expensive. I've never done SEO as a job, I'd rather work on my own sites, but always willing to accept new challenges and help someone else.

I remember some guy that almost charged you for breathing... phone calls cost $xxx, each email costs $xxx... and consultations started at 5 minutes, in case you just wanted to ask a quick question (for $xxx, of course) ... just amazing

why are SEO services so expensive? what is that SEO experts do apart from the basic SEO techniques loads of which which can found for free right here on this forum.
and when it comes to Google can anyone really claim they know what SEO techniques work on google apart from getting backlinks with keywords in the anchor? G certainly does not kindly towards SEO.
what I am asking here is why are SEO services so expensive when all they do is the basics?

Well... I don;t know the exact answer, but for example some of them own loads of PR7 and PR8 sites, have connections or are DMOZ editors, have access to hundreds of sites where they can trade links....

Yeah, they do the basics, but at a much higher scale

i suppose a lot of the webmasters haven't heard of SEO. hell, a lot of my friends who are Oracle DBAs and Java architects working on web-based enterprise level solutions have never heard of google page rank.
i guess a guy running for example a large jewellery site and doesn't know or care to know SEO will drop a few thousand for increase in visitors due to SEO services

Lots of people looking for a new hire seo alway ask tons of question, and most seo are very nice to answer them free of charge before any work is done.

    Like:
    1. How will you go about selecting the keys and or phrases?
    2. What tools do you use?
    3. How are good report tools??

Do you think the fee start when the phone is pick up or email answering to a question. I don't think this is fair for the seo answering question for free??

Any idea a way around this? Not giving away too much valuable information before seo work start?

    Yeah, it's amazing.

But if you are able to double the clients companies yearly income it can be worth it.

Anyone who guarantess rankings should be taken out by the whole SEO community and shot repeatidly with rock salt till they give up...

Any SEO worth their salt (pardon the pun) will never guarantee anything more than top 30 listings for the main keywords for a website. In some cases that doesnt matter and is irrelevant as the searches people are doing for a website you optimise maybe completly different to what you expected but you still get 10000's of uniques a day.

Personally I used to charge myself out at £50 an hour but I dont really do consultancy work anymore... Taking a break from the job, after 6-7 years I need some R&R.

The problem with hiring a really good seo is that they can make loads of cash working on their own sites.

Pay him performance-based. That way it's free if they screw you and they have a vested interest to perform and excel. Or at least bring down that hourly rate and add an element of performance based incentive. That way there's a clear goal as well. (Increase traffic by N% / increase top 10 rankings on G by N etc.)

Problem with that is that one persons opinion on performance is different to the next persons.
