What is a good but FAST cart system?

I have tried Magento but it is slow on a shared hosted server. We only have a small site - not worth getting our own server yet.

Are there any reasonable eCommerce packages that are fairly fast and not too dear?

    Thanks

Try with zs cart - ecommerce shopping cart software solutions provider.

You can run Magento on a VPS server. I don't know how much providers charge for a VPS server in your region. Thats one alternative if you're not ready to upgrade to dedicated server. There are the paid shopping carts like Volusion, Shopify, etc which you'll need your domain name to point too but you pay a percentage of your earnings & whatever else they might charge you to those lateral shopping carts I mentioned. Check out Opencart, Prestashop, or Oscommerce as other alternatives to Magento that can run on a shared server. It might other wise be your best option to invest in a VPS server to host all your domains, jmho.

Opencart is worth a look, as is prestashop (a new version of which is due soon). I'd avoid zen/oscommerce, they're pretty stagnant and old fashioned. If you used a vps for magento, there are some good tweaks you can do to make it run at an acceptable speed (e.g use nginx instead of apache, use an opcode cache and tweak the mysql settings)

Volusion is simple and easy and the support is good, you'll get your money's worth. I'd still recommend Magento over it anytime though. =)

There are quite a few good open source carts (which I can't remember off the top of my head)
    Worth taking a look

Would it become popular if it is not good? Zen cart for me satisfying and so far so good. But if Zen cart is not your type you can try oscommerce, it is a good one too.
I heard many good thing about magento, I can believe someone disliked it. If you are looking for shopping cart, try checking this shopping cart software site. They have list of shopping cart software with information, you can compare and review this softwares to check out which is the best for your site.
