What is a good amount of traffic while starting out.

What is a good amount of traffic while starting out? I've just recently gotten into affiliate marketing and have been working extremely hard on my SEO. I'm coming to the end of my first month, and I'm averaging around 3 visitors a day, with an average of 28% of them being new.

I was just hoping for a quick response of if this is a good start or if I'm missing something and need to start expanding my SEO work.

    Thank you for your time!

A good amount of traffic is a traffic that has the larger amount of % converting to what you are targetting than traffic that is not converting (change converting to signing up - or whatever CTA is relevant)

EG traffic is great but only really great if it is doing what you need

My opinion is to reverse engineer the equation, starting with the amount of money you want to make.

    So the variables are;
    1. How much do you want to make per day/month?
    2. What conversion do you think you can acheive?
    3. How much do you make per sale/day (Depending on if you sell an affiliate product or adsense etc.)
    4. What amount of traffic do you need in order to hit that goal?
So for example, let's say you want to make $1000/month a goal of yours.
    $1000/30 days is aproximately $33/day.

If your product sells for $20, you need to make 2 sales per day. Or you can look at it in terms of monthly, in which you'd need to make approximately 1000/20=50 sales per month, or 1.67 sales per day.

    Stay with me here ;0)

So now it's simple. Since you want to average 1.67 sales per day you know that you have to hit a conversion rate of 1.67%. So for every 100 visitors you want to sell to 1 or 2 of them and by default you will hit your goal of $1000/month with 100 visitors per day.

    Another Example:
    GOAL: $5000/month
    Affiliate Commission: $25/sale

    $5000/30 days = $166.66/day.
$166.66/$25=6.666. 6 or 7 sales per day to reach goal.

If you figure you'll convert at 1% (the industry standard) you'd need about 600-700 hits per day to achieve your goal of $5000/month.

You can also control variables such as the affiliate commission, a higher commission will get you to your goal faster, and also a higher conversion! If you were to double your conversion, you'd only need half the traffic to reach the same goal!

So just use that sort of reverse engineering, and it will help you create both realistic goals, and a daily action plan to do it!!!

    One more thing...
If you are getting 3 visitors a day, then you are getting around 90 visitors per month. If you convert at 1%(the industry standard), you should be making around 1 sale per month.

    One last thing...honest!
If you are just starting out, then a good amount of traffic to get, is a better amount than you got last month! If you are continually improving, it doesn't matter what amount you are getting. Unless you got bills to pay!

    Hope that helps!

PS. I've attached a little spread sheet for you, that will really help you with your calculations ;)

Wow Herc, that's some great information! If I had the ability to like it, I would! I like the way you think and will be adopting it as my own.

My website is also about internet marketing, and I think this would be some great content. If you're interested, I would love to have you guest post on my site. This would also be a great way for you to advertise for your website.

Either way, the information you've given is as priceless as it is timeless! Thank you.

I wonder why you don't have the ability to like it. Strange. I'm a new-comer to the forum, and relatively new to SEO, but I have been doing great so far, ranking sites #1-#3 in less than a week and resulting in 100's of visits per day.

I think it's because I am not a full fledged member.

I've been very aggressive targeting some easy keywords, but I've been hitting page 2 and 3 a lot. I haven't quite mastered SEO. I'm troubleshooting what's going on. I think I've narrowed it down to backlinking. I have no backlinks, so I really can't compete. I'm working on backlinking right now, if that goes well I'll know everything else I've done was not in vain.

I'm more concerned with profits than traffic as well. I'm two weeks into my project, and I'm up to 3000 page views a day. I like being able to beat the previous day and aim for higher page views, but in the end, it's all about how much money gets made at the end of the month.

Don't concentrate on quantity, keep in mind quality of traffic. If you are getting useful traffic that is going to be your customer or traffic that really likes your site, content, services your offer then it will profitable to you. As you are getting 100 visitors per day and not getting any profit or just increasing your bounce rate, then it will of no use for you. So try to concentrate on factors that can help you to increase the quality of your site not to quantity of traffic towards your site..
