Hope it's okay to post a discussion thread here. If not, I won't be offended if it's moved. What do you consider to be a fair price for a logo here? Obviously, a $10 contest will attract different attention than a $50 or $100 contest but I wanted to get some idea of what you guys consider to be worth your time?
Depends what your looking for in the logo and the quality. Best thing to do is check out all different priced comps on here and get a good idea...
Maybe - but not reducing. And not for the existing contest - I have more coming very shortly. I've only posted the one and at $50 but it just seems like a relatively small amount of money. I also wondered if there are certain awesome designers who lurk in the shadows and only come out to play when there's a certain amount on offer. Just curious, really
Yes, there are certainly a number of designers that are only attracted by the larger prizes. These designers are usually the ones who design for a living and can only afford to deviate from their clients' work if the prize is sufficient to make it worth entering. Regarding a 'fair' price for a logo, like has been said it does vary greatly but a fair price is generally $50+ for a logo, that's as low as it can go before it becomes slave labour in my opinion. Of course, that's not to say it's wrong to hold/enter lower priced ones.
I'll let others decide if my work is "awesome"... I've gotten some good feedback, I can say that. But I do know that my bare minimum for entering a logo contest is $35, and that's only if a design idea strikes me in the time it takes to read the thread. Otherwise, $50 is where I'd start. But that's for a contest, where some of us are doing it for fun or practice, not necessarily the money (although of course that never hurts!). Honestly, a good, brandable logo is worth much more. Large, established companies pay hundreds, even thousands of dollars for a brand identity. Of course large ad agencies are akin to the US military ($500 hammer, anyone?) when it comes to that. Personally, I charge in the range of $75 - $500 for logo work, depending on complexity, what's expected in regard to comps, revisions, etc, and yes, depending on the client. Some clients can easily afford $500 for a logo, and frankly, if I charged them $75, they'd think I was a no-talent hack. Others are on a tighter budget, so for them, pricing may vary. Overall, I know what my time is worth, and that's usually what it comes down to. (Edit: I design for a living, both full-time for another company during the day, and freelance on my own at night. FWIW.)
As above, I have charged top dollar for logo design in the past and continue to work like this in a semi-regular way. Contests for me are a way of practising in all honesty. I would never spend hours on a design or perform countless revisions like some people do. Because I live in an expensive country (England) and the rates for design work are so high here, it means I sometimes think of the prizes here on DP as somewhat insulting, but when I think about it I suppose people in other countries and situations might think it is a lot of money. So, it's all relative I think in the end.
I can try. I'm bloody rubbish when it comes to giving feedback. I know what I like and I know what I don't like but I can't always explain why
there are a lot of designers out there who would never even think about entering a contest that was $50 or more dollars (like me), just because they know in those contests, the "big guns" would come out and totally whoop them. I'm fairly new here, and not a great designer so I generally enter the ones that are $15 - $30 dollars, because I know I have at least a chance at it. And that appears to be the pattern, there are a lot of people with under 100 posts that enter those 'small' contests. But I only enter the contests when I have some time to fill, and I don't have any other projects that I'm working on, the money is just a bonus for me.
Ditto what Mac and Davey said. I have entered some very low paying contests because the concept idea came to me quickly and the creation of it even quicker (but those are fewer and further apart now). One thing I would like to point out is that many folks want "unique" work (not to be confused with original work). However, market research really needs to be done in order to find out "how" unique it is, and that is definately time consuming which equals more money. Just wanted to add that.
I'm in England too (Herefordshire) so perhaps that's why I think $50 isn't a particularly huge amount for a logo.
if i needed a logo i would only pay like 20 dollars maiximum ! i was going to post 5 dollars but after thinking about it i changed it to 20 but who cant come up with their own logo ?
i do appologize if i offended anyone i just dont feel that ANYONE should pay more than 20 dollars for a logo, i mean whats a logo an emblem with your company to be branded by ? how much could you honestly charge someone with out having a guilty conscience or how ever you spell it
Perhaps there's much time, effort and imagination involved? I know I've designed a few logos myself and some of them look rather nice. However, if I can pay $50 or $100 and have someone else put in the time, their own skills, fresh ideas and talent into creating something for me then I think it's money well spent.
for something as simple as a logo i would prefer to trade skill for skill on someting instead of pay but i do like your out look on an outsiders own imagination because we sometimes decide to think inside a box.
