What is a Directory? Can it help in increasing backlinks?

 

Directory is one of most important part of SEO and now we can't approced with it. According to big G! backlink is required to make you site trusted but remember to exchance link with only relevant site. We can't alway make link exchange with relavent site cause most of site will not gonna accept you proposal of link exchange. So only the way to make bump your link on the web is through directory. Some directories are niche and some are mixed categories. Submit your site every to at least 5-10 directories to get good response by SE. Anyway, just believe at only directories rather than other one.

Of course, the quality of the web directory is also important. A backlink from DMOz.org or Yahoo Directory will help you more in terms of relavence than, say, Joe's Free Backlink Farm and All Purpose Web Directory

 

This is not entirely true. Google claims to not count nofollow links, but no one really knows Google's algorithim but Google. I certainly don't trust Matt Cutts to tell the truth.

Directories, especially high quality paid directories like Bam Directory can drive targeted traffic to your websites.

I'm gonna have to agree with this. No one knows for sure. Its no secret that Google has long since waged war on Directories. However, both my popularity and registration numbers and site inclusion have not declined as a result. The thing people need to realize is that a directory, like PR and other things are only one part of working towards getting traffic to a site.

I think people should focus on getting relevant high quality links to their sites, rather than a huge saturation of tons of completely unrelated links. Directories, niche's based especially can do this for you. Don't expect to buy a listing in a directory and get a PR bump in exchange. If that's what you are looking for then you have been misinformed.

A directories purpose first and foremost is traffic. The link, and any power from that link should be secondary. What you are hoping for is that one, your site is better indexed as a result of having that link, and two, that traffic to your site is not necessarily generated from the SE itself but rather by a search in the directory itself, or the result of a search result for your listing in that directory in the search results in the SE.

Remember, when you pay for a listing in a directory you should be paying for the time to approve, visit, review and list that link, not pay for the link itself. A directories mission as well should be to drive traffic, not provide a store house for links.

I could not agree more. We've run KingBloom for well over 5 years now as a directory and the number one compliment I get is that people see TRAFFIC from the site. That's always been our mission, and should be the mission of every directory owner that runs a quality paid directory. You pay for our time for the listing and our work that drives traffic. Not the link, and not PR.

Now if Matt Cutts and Google could get that through their heads, I think we'd all be in a better position to educate people on what they should really come to expect from a Directory.

In my career as an SEO I have been prioritizing and submitting in to directories and directory is really important aspects to gain a lot of backlinks. you will just need to have a little bit of patience thou.
