What is a commercial site?

If I start a personal blog, write posts about things like cats' rescue stories etc, but at the end of each post, I put a clickable link to an Amazon product (affiliate program), would that be considered a commercial site?

If a site generates revenue that is not for a non-profit organization, then it is commerical. Your example - yes, that's commerical.

A commercial site is one that actually produces revenue.

There's a chance it would always stay a hobby site.

I see it differently. Any site that has ads (even AdSense ads) is considered a commercial site since it produces (or may produce) some kind of revenue. There's no fuzzy line between commercial and non-commercial sites. If your sites makes a penny a day (or has a potential of making a penny a day) it's a commercial site.

No. Putting a link or a banner on a blog does not necessarily make it a commercial site. A commercial site is one whose primarily goal is to either generate sales or else its goal is business in general. A personal blog with an affiliate link or a banner on it isn't commercial in any way--it is just a personal blog that happens to have a link to a business site on it. For it to become a commercial site, its goal from the very first onset should be clear: it is there to generate business or income.

You're wrong. Any site that can generate revenue. Placing ads, affiliate links, products, etc. is intent. You don't put up an ad on a personal site and then later say "oh, no, I didn't actually intend to make any money off of that. I didn't think anybody would even click it. I just put it there for fun." No. If you place anything on your site that can generate revenue, and you have not registered as a non-profit agency, then your site is commercial. It doesn't matter if your site is about cats, the latest wearables, or the bump on your forehead....any type of ad, affiliate link, product sales = commercial.

Yes, any site can be monetized. That's not my point though. My point is a personal site will always be a personal site. A site that happens to have an affiliate link or a banner ad is still not a commercial site--it is just a personal site that happens to have a link or banner in it. It is like a house where you happen to have a home-based job. Is the house the office then? It cannot be considered an office. It is still a house where one just happens to work there. A house will only cease to be so once it is converted for business purposes. Until then, it is still a house where one happens to have his job in. So a personal site is still a personal site because its main point is to be a personal one. The ad or affiliate link just happens to be an add-on to it. It is not the main point of the site, so it is not strictly a commercial site.

You don't understand the nature of this thread.

You're also the only person here who thinks a site with ads is not commercial.

A website that generates revenue or cash flow of any type that isn't under non-profit organizations filed with that state. So if you're selling a product, selling advertisement, selling a service, your site is commercial. Whether you plan to do so to make a profit or just to pay your hosting bill

If you use something that you thought was free but actually it wasn't and you get caught and prosecuted. You will have to pay penaties. If you run a commercial site just be careful and look at every module and plugin especially if they pull or use sources from other websites. You have been warned!
