What is a backlink?

I had a look at some of the sites linking to my site today and I saw that some of them hadn't used <a> and had just left it as http://www.gamercity.co.uk no links just the text. How then does that count as a link? What other things can count as a link? I mean is there more than one type of way to link to a page?

    Thanks guys!

you should already know this considering you already done an anchor text link as your signature, strange question for someone that knows what an anchor text is already!!!!!

Anything that someone else can click on that directs them to your site counts as a link, except of course links on the site itself.

I know this but does it have to be a hyperlink? Can it count as things like an image? What if it isn't a hyperlink but simply the address?

I am surprised that you own websites, have put up links in your signature and still ask this question. It looks like you just wanted to promote your website. I could be wrong but that's how It seems.

if when you view any post or site you should actually see (well depending on your browser settings) the cursor change/highlight the 'link' and when you click on it , it links to the relevant site/url. therefore a link..

    otherwise its just free text..

    quick google seach http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=what+is+a+backlink&meta=&aq=f&oq=
    plenty of info.
