A back link is a link to your website. It can be a post on a blog or a link on a site. You can get back links with your url in signatures of forums like this one and others that allow them.

A backlink is a link to your site that appears on someone else's website.

When site A puts up a link to site B then Site B has a backlink. Backlinks help to increase PR, SERPs and most importantly traffic.

When you work on getting backlinks remember that the more relevant the site is to your own the more value the backlink will have for all three factors listed above.

Basically it's a link from another site linking to your own site. The more back links, the better the page rank ;D

Yes, it's not direct, it's a link from another site to yours.

Anytime that a link to your website appears on another website it is a backlink.

There are two types of backlinks

one way and reciprocal. A one way is when the site 'points' to you but you do not link back to them. A reciprocal (or exchange) is when you both link to each other. Both these are backlinks but the reciprocal type has much less value in terms of PR but could have great value in traffic.

You can define back link as a incoming link to a web site.
In basic terminology is any link receive by a web node (web page) from another web node.
As watchOut said is an indicator of the importance of your website.
