A links pointing to your site is called back links the best examples is: see signature link below here. this is called back links for that particular site to which that link is pointing. i hope now it is clear.
Whenever a site links to another site, it is a backlink. For example: Google just gained a backlink You want lots of these so your sites show up in search engines.
A backlink is simply a link from another site to yours Advantages 1.) Traffic, if the site linking to you has any 2.) PR- Some amount of the PR of the site linking to you will pass on to your site
Backlinks are incoming links to a website or web page. The number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of that website or page. Backlinks are also known as incoming links, inbound links, inlinks, and inward links. Search engines often use the number of backlinks that a website has as one of the factors for determining that website's search engine ranking. So backlinks are important
It means that you're now part of the proper Webmaster community who will spend all your time worrying about SEO, backlinks, competition, traffic, revenue, downtime, updates, etc., etc., etc.... Better to quit and drive a truck, maybe.
backlink is a link which is given from other sites to your site. it means a vote from other sites to your site

wow lol. Why so harsh on the noobie. Its just a link on another site that goes to your site. It helps because it will spread the word about your site to other people, and bring traffic to your site. It also helps in SEO (search engine optimization) which is how you get higher ranking for keywords. Thats important because it also bring traffic to your site from search engines like google.

I'm not trying to be harsh on him. I'm trying to be realistic. People think, 'Oh, I'm going to make me a webpage about my favorite TV show [or something], and then millions of people will visit and maybe I can sell some advertising and quit my day job. Oh, boy!' If I'd known what a long, hard slog it would be, I might have gone into something else to make money. It's like these poor schmoes who hear about some opportunity and think they can just jump in and start kicking a$$ with it. If it were THAT easy, then not only would more people be jumping in and doing it, but the bigger guys doing it would already be consolidating their positions and trying to keep out any competition. </rant>
