what information can websites get from your credit card?

If you pay by a credit card at a website(not paypal),and you JUST enter your credit card number and expire date,is this all the information the website can see about yourself? They do not have access to your name and home address do they? Or do they just have access to your name because it'd appear on their credit card statement? But they can't find out your address right?

You pay with ur using some sort of processor, paypal is just one of those processors, and every processor works that way. Unless website owner is storing cc info on their site, that only the website owner can tell not me not u or anyone else.

It is difficult to determine anything because different websites behave differently. Generally, if they do online real-time credit card processor then the number is sent off to a bank processing system and when it gets an approval, the merchant will get a confirmation code. They do not typically store your credit card number anywhere once everything is done.

Others which does off-line processing may log the credit card number somewhere in their database until it is processed offline.

Typically, it is unwise for the merchant to store credit card numbers anywhere.

Back to your question about the additional data as name and address. Well, it depends. Name is definitely required because they need to countercheck your name with your card number and most people generally what to know who they dealing with and it is important for generating invoice and all that.

Sometimes address is also needed to verify a credit card purchase. Sometimes if you purchase a product on the internet, the store may need your mailing address so as to know where to ship the item to. Without which, you will never get it.

Most would just use your details to facilitate the purchase and once it is done, they will not monkey around with your information.

    Well, unless:

    1. The site never asked for your name, CVV2/Card ID#, and billing address at
    any time.

    2. You only entered your credit card number and expiration date as indicated
    on the site.

    3. They've a privacy policy of sorts saying what information they'll store, or if
they track via cookies (feel free to correct me on this, anyone, not sure how
    to word it).

Then that's just about all they'll have. They can only store what you put in.

However, most if not all websites nowadays accepting credit cards will always
ask for the credit card name, number, extra numbers at the back or front, the
expiration date, and billing address. They have little to no reason to not get
any other required information to check for possibly questionable orders.

On the side, one company I know does maintain a credit card database for a
variety of reasons. But they impose strict controls on how that information is
accessed, keep track of who's looking it up, and I think they somewhat do say
    such in their privacy policy.
