lol now that is interesting thought. Our lives would not be that easy ... WWW would be a big mess ...
I am sure there must have been an alternative... if not Wiki would rule (for article search atleast) .... and many webmasters would have to spend $XXX,XXX to advertise there sites to get traffic since the main source would have not been there.... BTW i wonder what if they never did>?
