Nothing will happen. If your website is just an alternative space for file storage, or if it contains something, which is very much personal for you, you don't need to promote it, no link exchanges, nothing to do off-site.
But if you want the world know about your creations, specials and most importantly, your presense, then you probably need to do these stuffs.
Because, Search Engines are the ultimate tools, which bring your own contents to the world wide web surfers.

Link exchange is not that great. If you link to site A and site A links back to you, it's not worth much. One way links are much more valuable (eg. site A links back to you and that's it).

You should even be wary of a 3 way link exchange where you link to site A and site B links back to you. The reason is because site A will try to get many sites to link back to them, but will post all their reciprocal links on site B, thus making site B effectively a link farm, which is horrible for SEO. Google is too smart for that anyway and will figure out what they are doing.

This is not TRUE always. Do you think DMOZ or Yahoo Business Directory has a high PR, because they are only Yahoo! and Dmoz?
Google determines quality of content, number of backlinks is an issue, but not very serious, if the links are really useful.

Yes, you are probably better off by going with forums, blogs, blog posts and articles rather than link exchanges.

I would have to agree that forums, blogs etc... are a lot better than link exchanges for getting links. I have know a lot of people who are unhappy with their link exchange program...

The best link your website could ever have is a link from another high quality related website with higher pr than yours and much better if your link is placed within existing content ;)

Yes, that's fine as long as the blog/directory/forum provide quality dofollow link

Link exchange is the process to get links to your website by any means, that may be directory submission, article distribution, doing social bookmarking and Link building with other theme based websites...

And I always thought Link exchange is an exchange of links between two sites. Getting links to my website doesn't have to include a link exchange.

I have never done any kind of link exchanges. Never.

So did it hurt my sites in anyway? I don't think so :)

I think it is perfectly fine to build backlinks via other ways than link exchanges.

I totally agree that one way links is far more better than link exchanges because if you often do link exchanges eventually it will increase your website risk of being banned in google.

Link exchange is one of the strategies that will help generate more back links.. You'll have lesser amount of back links that your getting if you don't participate on link exchange..

if you are a new site,do link exchange must be necessary. but if you are a mature site, you can weigh your own.
