Fellow directory owners and webmasters, If a new directory script was released, different from all major scripts currently available in the market, with excellent features, and that offers customers excellent post-sale service, and actually HELP them with issues pertaining to the script and during mod installations etc... Do you not think that the industry could be revamped? Feel free to share your thoughts.
First thing is that the script you describe would be interesting to see, but honestly I know of at least one script that already does all that and more. However releasing another new script will not "revamp" the industry imo. The one primary issue script companies could address to "revamp" the industry would be to stop offering free versions. This would have a positive effect on the industry as it would help to decrease the number of spam filled, low quality directories thrown up for all the wrong reasons. To get a script the way you want, with the features you want can be done easily enough now. All it takes is a good coder and some $$$. The thing to really think about is this. Any out of the box script becomes just one of thousands of other identical sites unless extensively customized. The one thing a script that you describe would do is give more and possibly better choices to consumers. That however really has nothing to do with revamping the industry.
I have better idea. Maybe somebody can create program, something like Ducks Shooting for Internet but where we can shoot existing spam infested Directories instead. Now, that will be fun many of us will enjoy. fastreplies
Obviously, it has to be a paid script. The question is...could a new script, however different and better, become competitive enough to outshine the established ones?
I'll tell you what... check our directory and if you have not enough extras, tell me what we're missing and if that suggestion make any sense, we will add it to our directory in one week fastreplies
This is a different question. To answer you first question, I personally believe that the script (paid or not) has little to do with the quality of a directory from the visitor's point of view. The scripts are there to help manage the directories. All the bells and whistles are just that - bells and whistles.
I just wanted to see your submit page and this is what happened... AMRAY Web Directory Error 403 Access to the URL that you requested, /cgi/amray/addurl.cgi, is forbidden. Please CLICK HERE to return to the homepage. Same goes for "Add Premium Url" (...) Unless you meant another directory and I was mistaken?
Out of curiosity, would gaming PageRank be considered bells and whistles, or a show of how quality because a site has only a few listings but a pr5 (...)
Tried it, worked! But one suggestion: please update LinKernel's thumbnail on your directory. http://www.amray.com/cgi/amray/search2.cgi/?keywords=linkernel Thanks

Features doesn't mean awesome, nope i dont think the directory world would be revamped by it, its another script offering the chance to run a directory.
Imagine world where you can have 10,000 directories and never look inside to see what is going on What a wonderful world this would be fastreplies
I think it would be a hard slog to compete with the big two without having something really unique to offer. I don't agree that a script can't make a difference in the directory itself. I've used 3 different CMS programs for non-directory sites. While WordPress has more features and market share it is the worst in terms of database access times. The backend can negatively impact the visitor's experience. The delay to get the WP admin to load drives me absolutely batty. If I were ever inclined to go into the directory script business, my strategy would be to combine the things that make a good directory with those tools that make a good blog. The focus would be on useful content rather than bells and whistles. You would not see too many features that start with "automated" except those relating to spam detection. You would not find a category dump or tool to scrape DMOZ and there would definitely be a well-written user's guide on how to configure and customize sites. If you simply plan on making your version of what's already out there then I would suggest you don't even bother.
No I don't plan on releasing any script but...I know of a countable few members who have enough skills and credentials to create a script on their own without having to seize ideas from any existing ones... I believe if they put some time and effort into releasing a new script, it could be a success
I don't think another directory script would make much difference. The problem is that the majority of the public use search engines and not web directories. The only people(most) that use them are other webmasters.
I believe there are several members who are in build mode with new scripts. I look forward to seeing what they come up with.
A generalization that is far from an absolute. The majority of visitors to my directories are searching for information and actually do visit the sites listed.
