    I would have started with building pages on Squidoo and Hub Pages and earn some money from them. Use them to figure out good niches.

    They could then fund your costs for the VPS and domains.

    Then buy a few domains and build sites, hosted on your VPS, that sells the products that sell well on your Hub Pages/Squidoo pages, based upon your findings mentioned above.
