if my friend transfered his domain name that expires in 6months from his namecheap registrar to me on my godaddy registar, will it be completely free? He will only have to pay the transfer fee right?
I won't have to pay anything because the domain name doesn't expire until 6months right?

Transfer at Namecheap and GoDaddy is always free. You will need to pay for another year of registration for the domain name at Godaddy. This will then extend the domain name by 12 months, ie 6 months + 12 months = 18 months before it expires ultimately.

Transfer is free at ANY registrar service... as long as you pay for the 12 months extension.

Or in other words, you have to pay the transfer anyway unless you push from one namecheap account to another namecheap account or from one godaddy acccount to anouther.

One idea is that Signing up for an account at Namecheap is free. Why not just sign up there then have your friend push it to your account. Then you do not need to pay until renewal time.

Namecheap is not a bad domain name registrar to be with.

This would be the best idea if you wanted not to have to pay another 1 year renewal yet.
