When your vbulletin license expires, what happens? Does the forum stop working or something like that?

An owned license you don't have to take down (you just don't get updates any longer... you can get updates for $30/year I think). A leased license you have to pay annually.

Well, I was just wondering what would happen with someone with a dead forum who has no interest in paying any more

I can live with that :D

Just don't see any use on paying 85 bucks for something you aren't really using any more

My feelings are to go with phpbb. If the site does take off and you wish for VB then you know your investment is worth it.

You can run a solid phpbb site up to about 1/2 a million posts in my experience before server issues start to be a problem.

I don't like forums, I have enough things to do already and forums take a lot of your time

And getting any decent revenue form a forum is almost impossible

unfortunatly security issues could cost you alot more with phpbb then a small fee for a license =(

backups on a cron job are free ...you only really need to backup the database maybe once a week to feel warm and fuzzy inside

And multiply 20 forums by the cost of a Vb license and maybe it's worth the risk. Also having all your sites using the same phpbb install makes my life easy...I can run 1 patch file into every site in about 10 minutes to any updates...if I have to I create my own patch file. My phpbb that I use is highly customized and has more mods, hacks, features, and SEO stuff than most VB forums.

It's not the software it's the user.

Do you work for microsoft? ;) Just used to blaming the user ignorance for a crappy product?

There are tons of holes in phpbb2. I have 3 posts currently inside there bugtracker where I have submitted more crappy code from within. I run 1 phpbb2 forum with over 180,000 users and trust me its a extremely modified version of phpbb2. I don't have any of the exec() calls that come with it. I actually have 10 phpbb2 sites and only 1 vb site.

Vb is in a different league coding wise. Of course that is what your paying for.

    lol..cute

No I don't work for MS. I agree that phpbb has it's problems but it's FREE. If windows was free I doubt anyone would complain. :)

VB is fine..I would switch any site that I had 100k plus users to it. I am an admin at CheapAssGamer.com which has 33,000 members and 1.1 million posts. When we hit about 20k members phpbb starting to fall apart. Also with all the holes that starting get exploited it was a nightmare. I did my best but around 1/2 million posts I just told the owner...time for VB..let's not delay. Of course the VB people were great and the switch went well. We lost a lot of mods of course but we are pretty much back to where we were now. We are looking into getting 2nd server to seperate apache from the sql. VB is pretty good but I think the impression of unprofessional that phpbb gets is a untrue. The #1 forums on the web is phpbb based. It's really all just php code and really forums are not that hard to write. However phpbb is gpl which makes life simple. The restrictions from VB kinda suck.

Well I think that's all I have to say on the matter.
