Sorry to sound morbid, but having just had an uncle killed and the death of my children's grandfather it has set me thinking...... What would happen to your domain names if you suddenly died? What evidence would GoDaddy, Enom, Name.com need for someone to take your account over? Do you care? Have you put all your passwords in a secret place just in case the worse happened?
The domain will expire auto, Thats it that all if you got a very good domain go talk with a notary before you die give your password etc , make a testament and type my name
Keep a list of instructions & your passwords for your heirs. They can then log in and change the contact info & keep any revenues flowing. Have a will that says what will happen to your assets & business.
There are people who pay registration up to ten years in advance to make sure the domain will survive and, I'm not sure what registrar is, but there is one offering 100 year registrations. If your domain is worth and you don't have heirs or nobody in your family cares about computers, a domain and associated website may still survive if you have loyal firends and followers, like happened with a popular free templates site when his owner passed away from a heart stroke. Other good sites sadly are not kept by family despite they renew the domain, such has happened to Mandarin Design, but like you can read in the following note, the last good thing is that Archive.org still can keep memories of your pass through Internet http://bytes.com/topic/html-css/answers/575878-mandarin-design-where-you
Wow 100 Years? It literally shook me for a second, probably have to find some heirs for my domains, hopefully my kid takes interest in this biz.
This is question about stuff you left after your death, so the real answer to this is another question:"Why would you care about that, you are dead!"
Yeah, and I recalled what is the registrar offering 100-year registration/renewals: Network Solutions http://www.networksolutions.com/domain-name-registration/pricing-chart.jsp
You can only register for 10 years at a time. The registrar will take your 100 year payment, register for 10 years, then add 1 year to the registration each year for 90 years. Do you trust your registrar to last 100 years? Do you think we will have the Internet and .com domain names in 100 years?
Each registar might have different requirements, so it's best to ask the support desk of each registar directly.
I've thought about this, myself. Good idea to have a file with all your site passwords and basic instructions for retrieving money from paypal, etc. Whoever ends up being your heir will be responsible for wherever your money is.
