What happened?

One of my sites just got dropped from about positions 4 or 5 on some keywords to well.. no where. I checked them on some tools and even in the 1000th positions it was not found.

Yesterday it was fine, I did not edit anything on the site... is this permanent or temporary?

My site is still indexed in Google so I'm not banned.

If you're site is new, if the drop is only for some keywords and if you still rank with this query :
    it might be sandbox

No my site is not new and it's been ranking around the first and second page for those keywords for a while now, and it is for most or all of my keywords ( the ones that I actually check )

PROBABLY temporary.. unless you have a spammy site, or something that the new algo doesnt like..
Are you signed up with Google Webmaster tools (sitemaps)? It will show you if you have any penalties..

Wait a few days, and if you did nothing wrong, your website will be back. I had same problem 2 weeks ago, and now my rank slowly crawls up.

Hopefully ... it will and checked my account and it doesn't show any penalties.

    Hmm. Hope so. :)

yah.. it's happened to me.. although I've never dropped totally out.. i've had search terms drop from #3 or #4 to number 700 or so.. within a week or so it's back to normal.. Actually happens with MSN/Live search a lot more often.. but since nobody uses MSN Search, i never notice.

I would worry already. Google thinks your site is spam - or this wouldn't happen. Get yourself a few good, quality, relevant links.

such things happen to my sites too, eventually they regain positions..then drop again...I've noticed this kind of behaviour since some months already

if the domain is new it could be in the sandbox.

what tool are you using to check?
