What happened?

I've been following my rankings for both my sites on 2 particular phrases:
Yesterday, video montage: was #2 for allinanchor:video montage, now #30, & photography forum: was #7 for allinanchor:photography forum, now #26

For actual rankings I was in the 100 area for both search terms (still struggling to get out of the google sandbox), now in the 300-500 area.

What happened overnight? All my backlinks still show... help!

There have been several posts suggesting that Google is in the process of another upgrade. I wouldn't panic. Just hang tight for a couple of more days and it will probably all work out.

If you are really keen have you looked at the McDar tool that looks at all the separate Google datacenters? Look under "Tools" in the menu bar of this forum.

Hopefully... things were looking to be getting better... I seemed to be pulling out of the google sandbox, then BOOM, everything gone...

Does it make sense that the allinanchor dropped as well?

During an update many of the datacenters report differnet results. If this is the case at least you know that Google is in a state of flux.

The last couple of updates the data center ending in 98 or 99 seemed to be the first with the updated results.

There are some different results, however almost all of them report me way lower than I have been for the past couple of months...

Something is occuring. It is fairly standard to see a lot of flux just prior to an update. Wait a few days... then panic if you didn't recover. Just keep at your building of text anchored backlinks and wait it out.
