What happened to major directories in Google?

I see many major directories such as gimpsy, joeant, iwebtool and more got de-indexed in some of inner page/category. Some of their pages are still in cached but no longer existing url in Google search. Is this a kind of penalized or just a flux for directories.

Maybe google is spooked by the bid for yahoo and they are thinking if all the big directories ever got together to build a join search engine they would lose market share?

Maybe they are thinking they would like to force directories out of business so website owners spend that money on adwords instead of paid reviews?

It's all a big mystery to every one of us. Only the people at Google will really know what's going on.? Won't they?:D
