It seems like Halloween is losing its appeal now days. I can remember growing up and getting excited about going trick-or-treating. I'm too old to do that now, of course, but it's interesting that I hardly ever see kids trick-or-treating. Not that I want them banging at my door, but it's just an observation. I used to hear about a lot of Halloween parties too, but there don't seem to be to be a lot of those anymore either. Does anyone here dress up for fun or parties?
Some of us are freaky enough we don't need to dress up. But seriously no I do not, but never realy did except for trick or treating when I was younger.
I like to hide in shadows and bushes so I can jump out and scare kids. I like Halloween because that's the only night of the year I can do it and not be some creepy jerk. I mean that still doesn't stop me from doing it once a week or so it just legitamizes it.
I remember when school had a halloween carnival every year. The older grades put on play in auditorium. Inside and outside there were all kinds of fun activities such as spook house, fishing booth, cake walk. We would have kids walking to carnival stop by house. Usually we got over 100 spooks showing up for treats. It was lots of fun. It is sad to me that many schools do not so much as allow a Halloween party. Halloween was somewhat fairy tale like. As kids, we saw no dark side. Now I fully understand why parents would not like kids trick or treating at homes of families they did not know but wish kids were treated to some of the fun we experienced. Alek is doing his part. His children will experience some of the joys of childhood. Shannon,
That was a darn nice thing to say - I'd definately send some GREEN your way, but I did for something else recently - thanx for the nice words. Yea, I can remember Halloween growing up - there was 3 of us boys withen 2.5 years of each other - Halloween was BIG. Mom would always make something like brussel sprouts that we'd HAVE to finish before we could go trick-or-treating. And then we'd have a couple of different costumes, so the neighbors wouldn't know (yea, right!) it was us coming back again. And at the end it was like the Stock Exchange - we'd dump our candy/haul for the night, and start trading. Apples, of course, weren't much, but candy bars (especially Butterfingers) were a hot item. Fun stuff - yea, too bad there are some wierdos out there that kinda ruin it - I'm lucky to be in a neighborhood with lots of kids that still gets into it. Speaking of getting into it, attached are a few pictures - all these are hand-held that I just shot after seeing this thread - I'll shoot better ones next week. Kyle was helping me put up Bugville today - it looks good at night and only about half of it is up. And there is a whole house shot for those that want to count the number of lights I have up for that PR7 link (there's more to come) ... and some may see the attempt at humor with my "ON/OFF" in big letters on the lawn. Finally, I put Santa up climbing into the chimney, but my wife and kids all said it was stupid, so I took him down, but will put him back up at Christmas.
I think that is awesome alek. I remember all the fun Halloween used to be for a child and I'm glad to see that it is still very much alive in your neighborhood.
I will be putting a bit of coop weight behindhalloween and creating a few links. Its currently ranking around the 70 mark at the moment.. If a few more people chip in (or atleast blog about it) Im sure it could be up near on the first page
My sisters and I used to have a blast at Halloween. One year my sister dressed up as a witch, then sat at a table outside with the bowl of candy, staying very still until a kid tried to take some. She got a good number of screams when she moved. Now she's married to a guy whose church doesn't let them celebrate Halloween, so her kids don't get to go. My daughter loves trick or treating. This will be her second year doing so, since she's only 3, but she still talks about it from last year. My husband and I have had fun making her costume each year. Last year was a butterfly, year before a raccoon, and she was a scarecrow the year before that. This year she says she wants to be Tigger... almost had her talked into a carousel horse costume (don't ask me how we were going to pull that off, but my husband said he could do it). If we're making that one rather than buying, I really need to start making sure that's really what she wants so there's time. We'll probably use the scarecrow costume on my son.
In the YART thread, it was suggested I put the DP logo on my Halloween display - an interesting idea I might seriousely consider. It would be just about impossible to do something like the DP logo and have it be "legible" ... but heck, I could put the letters "DP" somewhere - I have some some leftover blue rope light (bummer I don't have green). One problem is that the webcam view - heck, go look at right now - is partially obscured by some Aspen leaves ... so if I put "DP" on the front lawn, you won't see it ... so it might work to put it on the right side roof. What do you guys think? alek P.S. The "ON/OFF" (see below) is MUCH more appropriate given the history of my holiday lights so that is going to stay. BTW, that functionallity should be enabled sometime next week ... and yea, it's 'real' this time ... although you'd be justified in being skeptical! ;-)
when i was married i would dress up with my step-daughters and take them trick or treating, and I'd always be the room-mother in their classes so I'd throw great halloween parties, now I just have an annual costume party at my house and make halloween food and stuff I'm still a kid at heart!
Ahh.. The good old days of Halloween.. I remember my parents wouldnt buy me this cool mask I wanted.. So I ended up wearing a ski mask. People were mean, some wouldnt open the door for me.
