When I first started on the net, altavista was the top search engine, and yahoo was the top directory. Now altavista has a yahoo search bar and now I am shocked!

It's either they were not smart enough or just lazy.

Yep,I remember Altavista, just like excite, lycos and dozens of other 'portal pages' which went downhill after google came along. I remember altavista even offering a google like page with only a search bar called raging.com. The truth was most people only wanted to search so portals lost traffic and google just had that PR factor to outdo other search engines.

Google itself is now going downhill trying to provide more and more services and in next few years a better search engine will come along.

I always thought Yahoo owned Altavista anyways, and used the same search engine/ results for the most part... I could be wrong but I'm going back from memory 8-10 years ago...
