What G thinks of keywords in domain name?

Discussion in 'Keywords' started by Julia-IT-Inventors, Nov 11, 2005.

I am registering domain name for my new project now and have found that a good name is available - it consists of all 3 words of highly competitive search term. Is it OK to have these words in the domain name?

    Thanks!

Yes, as long as it reads OK and does not look spammy. for example cheap-car-deals.com would be good but car-motor-auto.com would be not as good (not many people search for "car motor auto" I would think).

it looks more than natural :) it's a real search term, very popular, more than 35000 in Overture for September

I'd go for it but be careful of the Overture stats as they can be very inaccurate. I got a domain that said it had 10,000 searches a day in Overture which was absolutely rubbish.

if car-motor-auto.com is all that's available, there is nothing wrong with using it. It's the content of the site that determines if a domain is 'spammy'.

and what's about more than 80 000 000 serps in G for this keyphrase? can it also be illusive?

That has nothing to do with how many times a phrase is searched on, just how much competition you would have (or am I missing something here).

spot on, something like 'travel debt' has 28million results but no overture stats so number of results doesnt always give a good indication. If anything you want thenumber of results to be few with a high OVT as it mens there is little competition for a popular phrase

    Just an idea....

Isn't it better to use your business name? (Reasoning: You really don't want to use a different domain name for every keyword combination you use on your website. Besides, a lot of domain names are already gone. Also, what about branding?)

Another thing, aside from optimizing your domain name, you should optimize your site's content. SEs don't just look at the domain name to rank it high on their serps, it's the content plus how many competition you have for that keyword/phrase.

    :)

Its a good move to have your keyword in the domain as long as it is not spammy and easy to remember.
    good luck... :)

    Hi,
I also feel that keywords in domain names are a definite help specially so after Jagger. I have sites www.arounddelhi.com, www.shimla-resorts.com and both of them feature very well in SEs for their keywords, my company name also I have kept as Around Delhi Holidays so it helps in making it a brand name. Try if you can do some thing simmilar.

My guess is because the ones without the hyphens are already taken. I think hyphenated domains are extremely unfriendly for users, but it seems most people registering those domains are doing it for search engines, not humans.

The best reason for getting your keywords in the domain name has to do with inbound links. If your domain name has your keywords, then it is a lot harder for people who link to you to not use them in the link text.

The fact that the domain name itself has the keywords is in itself only a small benefit. The primary benefit is the potential link text.
