I started a forum and didn't want to invest too much in it in case it didnt do well, I started off with SMF becasue I liked the way it looked much better and professional however being in a country where internet penetration is low and most people access the net with their mobile phones I switched to phpBB because they had a mobile theme and for my market it is a MUST, no compromise.

Once it kicks off and goes well I will definitely switch to a better script VB seems to be the top choice.

MyBB is the best. No doubt about it. Just wait for MyBB 1.8. :)

I use SMF and myBB too. Unfortunately mybb is not in the list. My SMF 2 forums used to get bot spam but finally I found a way to get things under control. I think ...

Forum software is very complex and constantly subject to security exploits, hence it needs to be well maintained. Anyone who's really serious about having a forum should be willing to pay one or two hundred dollars for well maintained/updated software.

    We're using vBulletin.

PhpBB and myBB are both software which at some point would like to try out, but currently I use Website Toolbox. Works well, and is quite cheap.

I have heard some good things about phpBB though.

I use MyBB on some smaller sites that I wouldn't want to spend the $$ investment on until it grows. Works great and I believe they have a new version coming out in the not too distant future. Only flaw is the community is 1/100th the size of something like phpBB another freebie forum.

I use MyBB. Up until a couple of months ago I had been using vBulletin, but I'm not a fan of the newer versions so decided to switch to something I know I would be willing to keep up to date.

My first forum was with phpBB. Personally it was not for me. Why? Well the features were not user friendly. I can't say anything else because that is when i deleted it.

A Few Months later (3 Weeks ago) I installed SMF. First thing that i liked was the admin panel and the fact the features where amazing. The best part about SMF would be the MOD and THEMES - download right from their website and easy to install.

Overall if you don't want to spend money on vBulletin i suggest SMF

Now I'm using open source forum software called myBB. It has many plugins like wordpress. It also has many nice themes. MyBB has score 9.3/10 of free forum software category.
