What factors have made Google so popular?

I'm working on a new website right now and I am conducting some research.
I chose to conduct research on Google because of it's popularity as a search engine.

I want to know what factors have made Google so popular. Why do people prefer Google over the hundreds of other search engines that exist? Why do people still use Google today? How has Google still to this day kept its users?

    “I’ll just Google it”
    “I’ll just Yahoo it”

Which sounds familiar? Has become the biggest name on the internet, all earthing from their PageRank.

Their main site is clean and simple. Browsing is fast and they index quickly and more efficiently than anyone else. Bloggers/webmasters usually get sites indexed in days with Google and the other rival search engines can take months and even then they don't index many pages.

The fact that Google index so many pages this efficiently tells me that there is more unique content available from a quick search on G. They have also expanded their operations with Blogger, Chrome, Gmail, YouTube etc which has only helped to raise their profile.

That's why they have a 73% market share. The only good search engine (IMO) after G is Ask Jeeves.:)

Google became popular for the same reason it is still popular today: Its clean and simple search page, its speed, the high number of web sites in its index and most of all, good search results. You can thank the Google PR algorithm for that.

At the time, search results sucked, and every search engine were in a race to become a popular portal rather than focusing on their main task at hand.

Google has also always been friendly to users and webmasters, providing free tools and services left and right. Once approved by geeks, the promotion of the company became viral.

Google has start with a concept of "Simply to use and give accurate search results" while Yahoo started with "Put as many ads as possible on the homepage". They are totally different from the beginning. :)

If you search for the same keywords both in yahoo and google, you will see that google results are more relevant to what you are looking for.

Google has gained most of its popularity by means of offering decent search. They are technologically way up front. Another factor is "brand loyalty" and the fact that the majority of web users by default associate search with google.

Because of its unique search results Google has become popular.
At present advancement age other search engines are unable to compete Google though having experienced coders and technology.

They were the best in their field, at the time alta vista, etc. just looked at what people siad their sites were about and displayed those sites. Ah the good old days where you could put a dictionary in meta keywords and suck up all the traffic :)

If you create a quality product that fills the needs of the general public, you will have a big success as well.

You've got to go back in time to when Google started getting known. I remember back in 1996 using various search engines to find information, and it would take a LOT of effort to go through the results to find the right page with the information that you were looking for. Then one day I was at the library, I had to look something up, and Google was bookmarked, and right on the page, so I did a search with it, and all ten results on the page were relevant. And the next ten. And the ten after that.

Sure, nowadays you get a bit of crap here or there, but it's not like it used to be with other search engines.

So I naturally gravitated to using Google as my search engine of choice. It consistently gave the best results.

Simplicity which leads to speed and relevancy. I remember when I first started using it, I love the fact that it was a search box and it just fed me results. No in my face ads, portals to a news section, etc. I mean, as time went on they added it but, it's still much less bloated then other search engines.

Google's home page is extremely clean and simple, loads quickly, and delivers arguably the best results of any search engine and putting the best and most relevant sites at the top of the result list.
