Hello, This is a very nuub question, but what is an IPv6 address used for? I have 3 IPv4 addresses and 16 IPv6 addresses on my VPS - can I use IPv6 addresses with cPanel and web hosting? Or are they completely useless?
They're completely useless unless your clients' ISPs support IPv6. IPv6 will replace IPv4 at some point (due to the IPv4 depletion), but it's nowhere close. If you have a backup server, you might find it useful to use IPv6 to connect them, as the IPv6 routes are often far less congested than the IPv4 routes, and it might be faster. But in the grand scheme of things...yes, they are pretty useless for now.
IPv6 are the next set of IPs which are being released due to IPv4 numbers running out in the future and already in shorter and shorter supply. IPv6 uses a 128-bit addresses while IPv4 uses 32 bit addresses. The introduction of v6 is in preparation for future needs and it eventually will be supported. It is only a matter of time.
