A Sitemap is a file that informs the search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN about the pages that can be crawled or indexed. Further informs the search engines about the newly updated pages available for crawling.

The XML sitemap is generated for search engines such as Yahoo, Google and MSN in an .xml format. The xml sitemaps are very effective for dymanic url websites.

The ROR sitemap is a Resource of resource map in an ror.xml format that presents the pages in a website available for crawling
The Text sitemap is a document or .txt file that presents pages in a website available for crawling.

Creating Sitemaps will increase your website visibility in Google and other search engines. As a website owner thisis wat you need..

There are many free site map generators... I used Sitemapxml.net for my site... You can try with the free generators.

Simply put, its a map of your site with links to different pages and it is maintained for easier navigation of your sites by the search engines and spiders.

So once you have created the sitemap in XML format, how exactly do you submit it to search engines? Or where would you place this file in your web directory so crawlers can find it?

You can place the sitemap file anywhere you want, and you can name it whatever you want. On the root level of your web directory, make sure you have a robots.txt file. Inside this file, you can specify your sitemap. Do Google search on Robots.txt and sitemap directives.

When search engines come along, they look at your robots.txt file and will know that you have a sitemap, and where it is.

As far as Google in concerned, you can have a list of just the urls in the sitemap and they love that too. Best to use an xml format that supports both Google and Yahoo in my opinion. At least that way you'll know that pretty much any search engine can benefit from your sitemap.

A sitemap, or site index, is a webpage that shows all the different pages the site possesses. If the site is huge, the sitemap may provide a general guide, not to each page, but to pages under certain subject headings. A lot of home pages for websites have a link to the page's sitemap. When you look at the map, you’ll see a number of links that let you know where to find each type of page.
