What exactly is a Database Engine?

    Is it the same thing as a Database Management System?
    This post     of Shawn's got me confused. Is MySQL only a
    Database Engine when used with something else (eg. PHP)?

    database engine is the part of a database management system (DBMS) that actually stores and retrieves data.

    in usually DBMS that mean total brandname of database server.
    database engine that mean unique name, process and cover how it work?
