what exactly is a backlink?

    I have a quick question.

When I go to google and search "www.tankinz.com" (my url) I get quite a few results.

Yet when I type in "link:www.tankinz.com" I only get one result. I am just starting to learn how to pagerank better and I understand that backlinks are very useful. So by typing in "link:www.tankinz.com" are these back links?

Google does not disclose all your backlinks, so typing link:www.tankinz.com in Google will only show a sample of backlinks. Check linkpopularity.com to see your backlinks in 3 major search engines.

You can use yahoo's site explorer to give you a pretty accurate look at site backlinks, yours and other people's.
to use a backup or a 2nd opinion, try backlinkwatch.com

Google's link:// command only shows links to your homepage, and doesn't show all

The absolute BEST tool for checking backlinks is Google's Webmaster Tool

    http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools

because it gives you backlinks for each page of your site. Not to mention a lot of other data and information useful to rank well in Google (e.g. how often Google crawls your site, if Google finds problems with your title and description tags, etc)
