what effect does moving IP/host have on search rankings.

Well the title I think say it all, I recently moved hosts so this is why I'm asking. Hopefully it does not damage rankings in anyhow or retrigger the sandbox of something awful like that.

If you have no/limited downtime, there should be no issues. Good luck

If the content/layout of the site does not change and you have no downtime in the move, there should be no ill effect whatsoever.

hi folks, thanks for them replies, a little downtime nothing major. I did change the layout, but not the content (except for addition of new stuff of course). Seems like the change of ip itself is not an issue then. On the other hand I doubt it would provide me any benefit because the IP is static.

Don't worry about downtime too much. Even an extended downtime won't hurt too much. Sites that have been down for days and weeks ahve done just fine.

But don't be lazy and let your site stay down. Downtime means no traffic and no money!

I have seen the exact opposite! Downtime seems to kill the serps for some time, I have seen this happen with a few of my sites. Maybe some others can chime in with thier experiences.

I've never had a site down for more than a day, but the last time I did a complete redesign of my layout (no content change), I lost my #1 rankings for about a week on MSN and a month on Yahoo.

That's a shame. I had a site down twice for over two weeks and didn't lose its rankings.

well technically it was not downtime, but i had password protected the site, so content still unavailable to google and others. Diamond, what about Google, did your rankings maintain. A week and month is really quite barable I think. Shows the emphasis Yahoo and MSN have on onpage factors still though, doesn't it.

I didn't have any good Google ranking at the time so I didn't really track it - being #68 or #568 doesn't make a hell of a difference :)
