OScommerce maybe more complicated. You may take zencart as one of your choice as well.
if it still slow then i dun think it a problem of shopping cart. It maybe come from the problem of your hosting which 10 k traffic and 500 products you do need a VPS or dedicated server to support it.

For the product category you are selling design and clean site is of great importance.

If your budget is high I will recommend Magentocommerce( use a proper hosting company that takes care of site speed).

If budget is less go for oscommerce 2.3.1 version or Zen cart.

Open cart is best for you according your technical knowledge. It is very easy for you to handle.

Another good thing is that it comes with a pretty good template by default, so you would not need much to re design it.

I recommend you to try ASP.NET Shopping Cart Software "AbleCommerce". It is easy to customize and affordable.

Zen cart or OS commerce are easy to configure and are widely used.

You should have a proper magento hosting partner so it will work perfectly and also a good support will help. I still go for magento it's the top ecommerce solution, feature rich and robust.

I've tried a few different ones, but favour Prestashop. Whichever one you choose just be sure to checkout their forums before hand, slower forums tend to be bad news when you need the support later.

I succeed make something nice store with Joomla and virtuemart, great community, add-on free or cheap...some people like zen cart, Magento is more pro but difficult to modify and server ressources hungry.

Tried OS Commerce.. Tried zen cart... while these may be simple and great learning tools to see how a shopping cart works, they are way too out dated.

Just to get them halfway working with the basic google api's you have to install all types of conflicting add-ons. They're horrible..

The best shopping car is Magento and the best host is Magemojo on SSD drives. I've tried Simple Helix , siteground, godaddy, the only good host is MageMojo.com , magento is a complicated beast, I've lost too much time and money trying to figure out the best host. Hopefully you don't have to go through all the same trouble I did. Keep in mind I'm running 30k+ products on my site.

It depends on who will be handling the whole designing. whether you are good in website creations, if not, go for something tht allows you to create a website without knowing much about IT.

    Hello

I use to use Magento but found updatng, making changes etc to painful and time consuming.

I now use Prestashop and can't imagine using any other platform. So clean and easy to use with so many modules available to customise your store.

I highly recommend Shopify. In my opinion, the very best e-commerce platform available out there - specially if you're not exactly an experienced programmer!

You can also try it out for 30 days, for free - which is what I did.
If you'd like to give it a try, do use this referral link, please: http://shopify.com/?friend=albupele
