Adsense is for sites that can't be easily monitized otherwise. Sticking adsense on a site that would promote a product well is silly.

Almost always affiliates for me, though that cold be to do with the different types of site I use. Informational sites generally have AdSense on them and attract people looking for information and not motivated to buy.
Affiliatte sites are generally product/service orientated, and attract people that are actually looking to buy.

If I was starting a site from scratch with the aim of making money I'd look for a less developed niche and go down the product/affiliate route.

I thinks that depends on your target audience and nationality. Most Western people loves to purchase online.

For me it's adsense, because of the niche an because I have trouble finding good affiliates that will pay out to The Netherlands.

Totally site/operator dependent. A lot of high traffic sites out there with well optimized adsense placements make an absolute killing, but then affiliates who know how to market products/services well online, and have a fair bit of traffic, can make a whole pile of cash as well.

    I dont really get affiliates.

You can make a site, say, an arcade in few days, and put adsense on it, after some marketing, you start getting clicks,

But for an affiliate site to work, do you not need a professinal well established site -- where people are willing to purchase from it.

If you have an affiliate site for "DVDs", who is going to go with your site, when they could go with play.com / amazon

A 5 page site can make you some cash with adsense, but is it enough to get people to BUY products from it with affiliates?

It just seems strange that people are willing to buy from sites they've never heard of. or am i missing affiliates completly? lol ;)

    This is interesting to me.

I count on AdSense for several of my sites because it is almost a guarantee that I can capture income while affiliate sales can be seasonal or more hit and miss.

However, on a good day affiliate commissions can outstrip AdSense earnings.

I find it interesting how many folks find affiliate programs to be so much more successful. Perhaps I ought to be pushing more of that ....

People don't actually buy from the affiliates site. The affiliate works at capturing the traffic and sending the customer to the main site - such as Amazon, Play etc.

Affiliate programs require very targeted traffic to make conversions, to get the user to actually buy something. With adsense its just about getting a user to click which is easier.

Depends how much time you have to spend! Adsense is a really easy way to make a bit of extra cash. You can knock a site up in a few days and earn £5-10 a day without too much hassle. Affiliate sites I've found are a bit hit or miss, you'll either have a steady good income or nothing. I caught a 6 month wave of excellent Google results and was making a packet on affiliate sales, then Google dropped my site and fell back to my adsense earnings.

If you're looking for a long-term strategy, I would diversify.

For me Adsense is doing better that other affiliate programs

Reason: Adsense is not restricted to certain countries or regions like most of the affiliate Programs

If you know what to, Affiliate programs is far better than Adsense...
But of course... both of them can make you tons of money if you got the right tools and right solution.

I'm intersted in this debate and would like to gauge some experienced opinion on what would work best (Adsense or Affiliates) for websites focused on

    a) health and fitness
    b) cosmetic surgery

    Opinions appreciated.

Sometimes affiliate promotion is that easy too. We used to put sites up and have several $40 payments daily from then on. A lot (the majority) of affiliate programs do suck so it's a learning game.

    Cheers

At first i used ad programs like adsense, chitika, adbrite, etc but now i have started using affiliate programs and in a few months earned much more then what i earned in almost a year of using the other methods.

Now i use a mixture of both because it depends on the type of website... but i think if you optimized both as best as you can the affiliate site would make more money.
