What does Yahoo want? #1 in Google, #14 in Yahoo

I'm sure many people think Yahoo doesn't matter much any more but I'd like to optimize as much as possible. I'm #1 in Google for many of my key words but I'm not even on first page of Yahoo.

I've read that you should just focus on Google and you'll be fine in Yahoo but that has not been my experience at all.

Any idea on what could be happening here?

Sorry I can't help as I am worse than you...

My site is a small niche, for one nation - not exactly competitive keywords to put it mildly, and I am #1 on Google for quite a few terms, and front page for many.

Yahoo literally does not know I exist. You could go to page 50 and I still don't show up:rolleyes:

I improved my meta tags (keywords included) which is more important to Yahoo than Google which likes Back links better. Since then, Yahoo is blowing Google away one one of my pages. This past week on one page which has to do with Easter, I have been average 100 hits from Yahoo while Google 30. Some say Yahoo is dying, which might be true in someways as Google is better at the business part of it, but as far as I'm concern it still can produce decent traffic for a website and well worth trying to improve in the keyword positions.

Yahoo is certainly not dying, it is portal base as oppose to Google search engine and it has plenty of great contents for eg Finance etc that is a must visit for lots of people. I would say Yahoo and Google had different niche and Yahoo is certainly not dying, it may be going through a rough patch but I am sure it will be stronger for that.

Not actually, Microsoft is buying them at a premium, this shows that Yahoo at least have some branding powers left.

I actually personally use Yahoo, I don't think they are dying, it would suck if they did.

I optimize for google for a living, yet I can somehow never find a dang thing I WANT when I use it as a search engine, mostly junk, everything out of date.

It's true, I find a lot more relevant information using Yahoo than I do Google (MSN is just horrid though), but when I want traffic G is the place to aim for.

It's due to the diff of their algos. Google's algo can be easily manipulated, but yahoo's a bit difficult.

This is normal, they have different ranking systems, if you rank better on Google, who cares

I have a site that was #1 on yahoo and mid page 1 on Google. All of a sudden two weeks ago, Yahoo changed something (at least for my KW). My site lost it's ranking and so all my competition on Yahoo page one.

The results are compeltely different for page one and two on Yahoo now. The results had remained similar to the previous results for at least a year and a half. Did they change their algo recently, or is it just me?

I rank number 1 on Google and Yahoo for my low-key, yet high-wielding keywords:D Yahoo is about my 15th highest referrer, behind several instances of Google...UK, .ca, .fr, etc.

    Depends on niche markets....

You need to decide to focus either Google or Yahoo. If you focus Google, you ignore Yahoo. If you focus Yahoo, you ignore Google.

Be careful with trying to kill 2 birds with one stone approach in SEO. Most of your traffic as you know will come from Google. I have discovered as I focus less on SEO tactics and more on content the better google likes me and Yahoo seems to be liking content more lately. I have in the past chased after yahoo seo but it has on occasion killed my google rankings and I find this time better utilised writing content and focusing on backlinks and article marketing.
