What does "opt-in" traffic really mean?

Started promoting for a particular small affiliate (adult) and see some good conversion ratios. This outfit has some short but seemingly strict rules regarding promotion. Basically, they say they don't want any "non opt-in" traffic. There is some specific verbiage about newsgroups and people getting email they don't want to receive.

Now, I know this has been asked before but what about Craigs and Backpage - posting and scraping? Is this some sort of problem when it comes to "spam" rules? Aren't they "opting in" when they post a personal ad for themselves? What about me posting an ad for the website?

I do filter traffic through a blog, etc. so that's not a problem. However, I'm just wondering what these outfits mean and what they are driving at? I mean do they want the sales or don't they? How the heck can you promote with all "opt-in" traffic?

Opt-in mailing lists can be a very effective means of encouraging repeat business from your present customer base.

I think they are referring to any email advertising you are doing. In other words, if you are sending out a message to your email list, they want to insure that your list has opted in to get your stuff.

As for CL & BP, you can do an ad on there, and drive them to your landing page and have them optin to your list as a technique

@Nator: What's the easiest way to do this? When testing around, I sorta screwed up and just put in my direct aff link off craigs. However, I have something like the CPA redirector going on my blogs. Course, that's not really an "opt-in" as it forces them right to my aff site :) What would be the easiest way to put up a "optin" on my blog page? Any way to make it like one click? I don't want to lose sales by putting them through any more steps than I have to. This particular site has a pretty good conversion , and nothing on my sites or blogs compares to it since it is an established website with lots of members.

With the email techniques, I don't immediately put a link in anything. I send off an email or two, and then if they respond they get another mail that contains a redirected link. Some techniques I may send more than one email with the link. Wondering if I could put a "unsubscribe" link or something at the bottom? That would require me more coding though to maintain a block list. Again, I've not really run into any of this in the past as the word has been that if you effectively mask your traffic that comes from places that might not be "ok" then you are fine ... I guess unless someone complains?

Are you getting complaints from your affiliate manager? If not, run with it the way you have it now...

I've found that a simple landing page with just an email submit for list sign up works pretty well for list building. If they don't opt in, then forget about them; probably won't convert anyways...

Ya, no I'm not getting complaints and I think I've actually done "worse" in the past when making money. It just this one says "your account could be banned w/o warning" blah blah. I guess I wonder about all this, because so far my experience has been that IF you are making decent money with an aff they really don't seem to care how if it is sales. Sometimes, they don't even care if it's leads but they will shave you. However, this is actual sales, and they aren't paying me a very large cut. So, I'll add in some of that opt-in code and run with it I think :)
