PR is not calculated by a simple formula e.g pr1=10pr1 or 5pr2 or 1pr3 etc. It is calculated by an extremely complex algortihm which took a leading programmer several years to create the initial design and a further half decade to become the PR we now understand. Thus it is no simple number. The formula for any PR value includes many unknowns and extremely few constants (literally billions of possible combinations of values). Thus it is impossible to say without knowing the algortihm, and having access to your google backlink data. Though it will be achieved by gaining more backlinks. Fewer links are needed if they have a higher PR value. Other factors such as the no of outbound links on the page, the page relevancy (as deemed by googlebot), and the ease of crawling also go into PR calculation.

I have already ruled-out the waste of time theory, if for but one aspect alone.

Did you read my earlier post, where I mentioned other sites being willing to reciprocate links to sites at a certain Pagerank level?

In light of that, higher Pagerank can do no worse than gain invitations or links from extra websites. And I consider most extra inbound links to be of value.

Matt Cutts himself has said there is no value to having high PR. At one point it did, but as you know, things change all the time.

Some advertisers still think page rank is important, so I do keep an eye on mine.

If you build a decent number of incoming links, while focusing on good content, etc, page rank 5 will come naturally anyway.

I noticed that my inbound links, pagerank and income have all increased together in unison. So for the more part, I don't believe what you said.

Best I can tell, they are interrelated to some degree.

Plus, I got several links to my site the past week, that would not have been offered if my site was still only a Pagerank 2. That alone is proof that what your wrote is factually incorrect. Even if Pagerank was only important to website owners, that alone would make it important if they set it as a criterion for who they link with.

I agree that its an obsession for some webmasters. On the other hand, its hard to miss that Google is retaining the ranking system. And that many important sites, or ones with good content, have fairly high Pagerank. Some exceptions. But in general, I find that many of the really useful websites I find for information needed, don't have a low pagerank.

One of my sites just gotten PR 5 recently (after 4 years) and what I can share is that you may want to create a community driven site so that it will keep on drawing people to use your site and eventually talk about it. This is what I do for most of my sites. For example, you can create a site that allows users to register and share about their expertise or view in terms of your niche. This way, the content will grow over time without your effort and more and more sites will link to you as referrals as well. Of course, some very good viral sites can take less than 1 year to go to PR5.

I used to focus a lot on PR when i was starting out, now, all I want is just profitability and sustainability.
