What does it take to make money with Adsense?

I want to build a website that generates adsense revenue.

Roughly speaking, how many pages of content are needed to earn say $2/day? And how many impressions? What is your average CTR? I am just wondering because I want to set an earnings target.

If you are building a website just to earn money with Adsense you are starting on the wrong foot

I pay for hosting and if I spend weeks building it why should I not get paid?

First, see my blog post The AdSense Content Game for a discussion of what to not do.

Second, how much you earn depends really on how much clicks you're getting and what the average price is per click. See my article The AdSense Formula for more on this.

So the answer is, "it depends". It depends on how much traffic you're getting to your site. It depends on how likely visitors are to click on ads. It depends on what your topics are. It depends on how well your site ranks in the search engines. Some say it depends on the phase of the moon as well.

Note that some sites do well with only a few pages. Others do miserably with hundreds of pages. You'll have to find the way that works for you.

I'm afraid I don't understand that comment. Can you clarify what you mean?

I think he means plugging your site. You copy paste those lines.

    Thanks for the tips

What is the average EPC? I read that it keeps falling and how people are only earning 3 cents per click. Is this true?

That's what I was thinking, but I thought I'd give him the benefit of the doubt. And no, I don't have "those lines" sitting around. Sometimes I find it easier to answer a question by providing links to documents I've already written. Hey, that's what the web's all about...

Well, I'm not sure anyone can quote averages other than their own. But yes, it stands to reason that the EPC's gone down because the minimum AdWords bid price has been reduced over time and things like smart pricing also have an effect.

You need to build a website that will bring traffic. That is your first step. After that, "monetizing" the traffic may include adsense, but it often isn't the big moneymaker.

The more pages of original content, the better.
The more backlinks with your keywords the better.
    You reap what you sow.

overly focusing on stats just keeps you from creating more content.

a simplistic answer...but sure go read Erics stuff and everything else you can get your hands on.

But if you are just starting, there is nothing like just doing it.

I've been wildly swinging from an average 33c per click down to a paltry 2c per click. It all depends on the weather I think or which side of the bed the Google monster gets out of. ;)

Having said that I have learnt a lot since joining this forum so we'll see what the future brings. It's early days for me though.

I think linking to an article that answers a question is a perfectly reasonable thing to do. I do the same thing, sometimes they are my articles, sometimes they are other people's. They probably end up being my own articles more often because I can find them very quickly, and I know they provide the right answers.

The Web is all about linking. I think it's perfectly acceptable to do so in a forum post.

Eric, you has been providing great information here. Keep it up.

Exactly, that's what I do. It's not like I'm expecting to make any money from any of you by sending you to my site -- I doubt anyone here would click any of the ads, after all. (In fact, don't: I don't want to be accused of enticing anyone to click them...) But I often discuss topics of interest to even experienced AdSense publishers in my blog, and so I'll link to that material here from time to time.

Truly, it's hard to answer a question like "What does it take to make money with AdSense?" in a paragraph or two. We can't spend all our days answering questions here in full, otherwise how would we ever develop the content for our own sites? :) At least I didn't suggest that they visit this site. :p

(Sometimes I do think I should just uninstall the AdSense Notifier and stop visiting this forum and I'd get a lot more done! :D)

    :D funny...

    WARNING: SITE ABUSES

It has come to my attention that some sites are redirecting to this one when their users were not expecting it. I have no control over this. The only sites I have control over that have anything to do with this site are justfuckinggoogleit.com, www.justfuckinggoogleit.com, fuckinggoogleit.com, and www.fuckinggoogleit.com. If any other site is sending you here, it is their problem, not mine. They may have been hacked, or they may be playing a joke. I don't know, and I can't do anything about it. Please stop sending me e-mail about this issue.

EDIT1:: Hmmm "Are clicks from China and India automatically invalid?" ... Interesting considering that I am myself from India.:D

EDIT2:: The comment on your blog is worth mentioning by the way:
I am based in India, though over 80% of my traffic comes from North America. I wrote to Chitika about this and here's their reply -

"Please do not think that India and China is being singled out. The problem is that, at this time, we dont have merchants who are willing to accept leads from India, China and Asia in general.

That said, when we do manage to strike partnerships in Asia and build the merchant base who accept clicks from Asia, this program will be expanded to accept clicks from Asia. We have to start somewhere (and as you well know US is the place to start). As this program matures and we add partnership, this program will expand with it. If I remember right, isn't that how Adsense also started ?

    To me,that's prefectly alright.

The first step is that you decide that you are going to work hard, put your main objective to earn money aside first. Just take a start and work a little hard. Surely you will earn a lot and even more than $2/day.
