What does it hurt?

So, if I have a site with zero page rank because it is new. What does it hurt if a person with a page rank 3 or 4 trades links with me?

So many people who have high page rank won't trade links with lower page rank sites but from what I know of page rank it doesn't lower someones page rank to link to a lower site it just helps the other site.

Am I wrong? If I am not wrong why are people so silly, why not help out the little guys?

People want to limit the number of outgoing links on their sites.

Thus they link only to sites, that bring them the maximum benefit (via a reciprocal link).

Yes, you said "it can make a profit from the link exchange" but why some other site ignore exchanging links especially with lower PR?

If you have a 468x60 banner for your book review site, you can submit that one to my PR3 toplist...can I promote a couple of online novels on your site?
I have another PR3 that is just the home page of one of the novels...I'll link that one, too, if I can get some kind of featured spot. PM me.

Assuming you have a quality site, the only reason people don't want to exchange links is because of what sachin410 said.

Giving away many outbound links from home page can actually hurt. It's because many link farm sites list links on their home pages. G doesn't seem to like sites that place many outbound links on their home page, even if they are relevant.

You would benefit from a high PR inbound link, but they won't benefit from a 0 PR inbound link.
So, why would they waste their precious space on their site linking to sites that have no PR.

people with a high pagerank have obviously worked their sites therefore they are probably too busy to take time out to link with a site with no pagerank when they could be linking with a site with pagerank.
