Google seems all for on-page SEO and quality content, but what is their official stance regarding off-page SEO? I don't think they like it very much.

What do you regard being off-page SEO? backlinks??? Then Google relies very heavely on them, they do differentiate quite a lot between the kind of backlinks, and they seem to have a very good algorithm to see whether or not a link is 'natural' or in some way forced onto the user.

Off Page SEO isn't backlinks; it's the active, unnatural and often paid acquisition of backlinks.

Well in that case, Google seems to be handeling them quite nicely. From their point of view a paid link is not worth as much as a natural occuring link that actually presents the user with usefull information.

They don't have it all under control, as they still offer webmasters the option to 'report paid links'.

Gee I'm sure that Google loves any attempt to manipulate their algorithm. You could always read Matt Cutt's blog for yourself.

90% of SEO should be off page and even though Google says they don't want any paid links, the truth is it can be a great way to give your site a boost, as long as that paid link is not obvious. I tend to use blogs a lot to build my links, but not my own blogs and definitely not link farms. You are not manipulating the SERPs as much as you are just making your site as credible as possible.

i don't think so. there may not be any official stance for it but i think the share of off-page in the successful SEO campaign is around 90%. getting paid links is different thing. it leads to illegitimate practice thereby increasing the worth of a worthless website in SERPs.

yes it says so but tell me how many websites you have linked to. it's the robot that crawl the web and not Larry and Sergey. they have developed the guidelines but you can't wait for other to link to you.

I don't know Shakira... My content is pretty great. I'm guessing that 20% of people who visit my website are going to link to me. At 20 visitors a day, that's like ... 4 links a day! That means 365 x 4 = 1460 links a year!!!!

depsite what some posters are saying here, 'offpage seo' includes backlinks. And Google takes backlinks very seriously, because they are much harder to fake than onpage content. Until now, of course :)

So should I just keep posting great content so that they will come? Can I legitimately ask for links?

You must be kidding... and then why do you have a signature in this forum, if it is not a backlink and it's not supposed to come from you? If it is not off-page SEO, why bother?

What Google objects to are to "paid" backlinks. But you can do a lot of off-page SEO creating posts in forums, comments in blogs, articles with back-referencing to your site, etc... Off-page SEO is the creation of backlinks by all means, though you should avoid paid links. And the best off-page SEO is to make those links "look" natural. IMHO, the very best way for off-page SEO is some kind of viral marketing, where you place a bait and users "want" to link to you.... that way you get "natural" links and yet don't have to create those backlinks yourself...
