What does getting listed/indexed mean?

What does it mean to get listed on a directory like dmoz? Sure, you get backlinks, so does that mean someone goes to dmoz searching for a site, and yours possibly might turn up?

Also, is it common practice for everyone here to submit your site to be indexed by all the major search engines like msn, yahoo and google? (since it's free) what does it mean to be "indexed"?

    Thanks for the help!

DMoz is a very valuable backlink since it's Google's own directory, so it helps with ranking.

You don't have to submit your site to be indexed, because once Google and the others follows a link to it, it will be indexed. Being indexed is just being listed in the search results.

By the way you don't have to be listed in DMOZ to get indexed by google.
