What does "Floating On the Stock Market" mean?

    Hey Guys,

    I was watching something about Alan Sugar the other day, owner of Amstrad and many other companies. i heard him say that during the 80's he floated his company on the stock market which had a capital of 1.2billion pounds.

    Can anybody tell me what floating on the stock market means please? and sorry if i sound stupud. im only 20. lol
