It has become so tiresome all of these posts - "Which script should I use?" and then watching the threads degrade into a series of drive-by one line posts promoting one script or another. It seems like it would be helpful if a FAQ section or a sticky thread could be developed where the script owners or their chosen representative could mention their product and list it's current features. The FAQ or thread would be locked to general conversation - it would simply be a place where all of the scripts are mentioned and their features explained. Any script owner or representative who turns their post into a soap box rather than simple facts or who lists blantantly false information (i.e. my script will even wash your dishes) should be removed from this list. I know this would be essentually giving free advertising, but it would be done fairly since it would be limited to one script = one post and all of the scripts/owners would be given equal time and space to discuss their product. As part of this concept, script owners should be able to update their message or FAQ as they release new versions/mods/etc. so the information is current. If it were set up as a thread, the initial post could be made by a moderator or someone where the complete list of scripts is identified and whether or not they offer free and/or for sale scripts with direct links to their posts in the thread to somewhat negate the benefits of being the first or last post in the thread. This first post would simply be an introduction to the list and offer no suggestions, other than the generic ones that would not promote any one script over the others. So, what'cha think - good idea or bad idea?
Reasons why it will not happen : a. Directory Owners do no own DP. b. So many scripts out there , meaning so many stickies/faqs, which is annoying. c. Directory Script Owners should have features list and information Stickied on their Site so you can just point to it, if you want to help. d. Bad Idea. e. More people will come screaming oh why you made that a FAQ and not mine, than users will post ideas hey lets make a FAQ for all the Directories out there that are free, cause i see lots of people also asking "which directory to submit to". It will result in chain reaction and in the end disaster. So, do not be lazy to help users asking " Which script should i use" . Regards.
a. Quite true. My premise of starting this conversation was to see if anyone else thought it was an idea worthy of bringing to DP and making some sort of official request. b. I'm talking about a single thread or FAQ, not one for each script. A dozen or more stickies would indeed be annoying. c. I imagine they all already do that. But, how many of us heard of even the industry leaders before we got involved with our sites? The idea was primarily intended for those who are not familiar with the options available. d. OK, fair enough - 1 vote against. e. I see your point, but the Solicitations & Announcements section is set up for that. Personally, unless asking for a specific type of directory I see those threads being made by the lazy folks who simply don't wish to take the time to do a bit of reading here. I was specifically thinking of those "Which script should I use" posts that do not list any specific requirements. The one being discussed right now where the OP asked about sub-category depth is a much better use of the forum member's time than the typical blind request for recommendations. Laziness doesn't really come into play here - seeing the same question asked almost daily has become quite tiresome, while I and others (yourself included) try to take the time to respond; I find all of us giving the same advice over and over again. Seems totally unproductive and an utter waste of everyone's time. Anyone else have any thoughts?
My thoughts: Do the research yourself. Compare features that are relevant to your needs. If there's a "free version", try it out to get an idea of how it functions. Then make your own decision.
You see such a post why even bother reading if you do not want to help or "Waste your time" no one asks forum members here to read all the threads posted. And i agree with minstrel. Simple as that.
I think you can research on this forum and you will see which scripts most people are using , and maybe it is the best
That was my original intention. To create a source for that information. Ultimately each site owner will have to evaluate what's out there and decide for themselves. And that decision should be based on facts, not who has the most cheerleaders. I did read the post I mentioned and as I had no concrete answer I did not respond. I had little doubt that most of the scripts allowed for the depth of categories the OP was asking for, but, conjecture on my part doesn't provide much help. Out of the 9 replies to the question, only 3 actually addressed the question - the rest were the typical "I use _____ - it's the best!" That kind of thing is what I'm talking about as being a waste of time.
simple, yet precise; and I agree. I mean, if people aren't willing to do their own research prior to jumping into a project, it's an obvious sign of their own laziness, and it'll be noted. I personally cannot stand those posts , however, if we could start getting the; I wouldn't mind at all.
