Did anyone else read the news on web domains? I was not happy about that! I have just spent £30 on decent .com domain names and then i learn that in 2009 we might be able to add our own extention. I bought a couple of domains for proxies and a forum and one to park a games site on. But now i find that if i had waited i could have had a .game or a .proxy or even .forum if i wanted. I'm not happy to be honest. I think that market is going to become saturated rather than improved. I also think it's going to be really confusing for anyone new to computers because the domain and extension to a new website could now litterally be anything. Tell me your thoughts.
Just be ready for the registrars to rape you up the tuckus on pricing for custom ones. Though I think it will be a BOON for accessability and users, not confusing at all because you can now use a full meaningful domain from one end to the other. You have a website about homemade wireless antennas you could just make the url homemade.wireless.antennas Though you are still going to have the dillholes using cryptic nonsensical words just to make life more difficult.
Dot com will still be popular since it has become the standard. If people start using custom extensions, it's just one more thing their visitors will have to remember.
1st off the only people who will be able to get a customized extension are those with a lot of money! Firms & Corporations. The initial cost for one will be $100,000 I read. Not many people can afford that, unless they go in as a team to buy the extension! Also once they own the tld extension they don't have to open it up so others can buy an extension from them, they can keep it all to themselves and use it for their own development.
