    DIET IS

    1. A PERMANANT EATING LIFESTYLE. Almost ALL Americans misconstrued (misinterpret) this word as a temporary change in eating habits to loose weight - such as a “protein diet”

    2. A word used by large food corporations to deceive old/fat women and men into believing their product is actually remotely healthy.

    3. What fat people need

    4. A food consumption pattern lazy people take up in the place of regular exercise in order to lose weight.

    5. The thing you’re on today, then off of tomorrow

    6. A four-letter word that often leads to deprivation, frustration and, ultimately, failure

like the time Homer Simpson was on a diet, Marge hands him a rice cake and Homer stacks about 12 fattening things on top of the rice cake and then goes "mmmmm, only 35 calories!!!" ;):)

I own Dietdo.com so I get to see a lot of the articles read by the end users ..and most seem to be about topics related to.....NUMBER ---> 6. A four-letter word that often leads to deprivation, frustration and, ultimately, failure..per-say ..so many try and fail.

The word "diet" is also used to describe styles of dieting such as the example that you have provided. Therefore, the word is being interpreted correctly by almost all Americans.
It is not objectionable for a word to denote two opposite conditions because the context will determine the appropriate definition of the word.
